County athletes Tim Hartley and Gordon Lee helped England to victory in the Masters cross-country home international at Birmingham. England grouped magnificently to take the first four places in the M40 event, which also involved the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Hartley, running for Charnwood, took the individual honours over the 8k distance for the second successive year in a time of 28min 04sec.

Two local 4-H members recently represented Walker County 4-H at the AgGeorgia Farm Credit Heifer Show in Calhoun, Ga. This was an area show with participants from throughout the Northwest Georgia area. The Walker County 4-H members involved in the show were Wayne Manning and Logan Edwards.

Charnwood women brilliantly defended their National Cross-Country Relay Championship at Mansfield's Berry Hill Park. There was no stopping the Loughborough club's trio of Gemma Steel, Tara Krzywicki and Hannah Whitmore who stepped up to the plate over the three circuits of 3k to win with 14 seconds to spare. It was Charnwood's fifth success in six years – and a fifth gold for Krzywicki, who was the quickest home runner and fourth fastest overall. "We're really pleased with the way things went," said

The Armuchee Indians were crowned subregion champs Friday night, but they didn't feel like cele-brating. Surrendering a touch-down on the game's final play, the Indians lost to Rockmart, 7-6, in a Re-gion 7-AA South thriller at Armuchee. Rockmart's Roshmel Young hooked up with Terian Beavers on a one-yard scoring pass on the final snap, and Joseph Lockley connected on the extra point to give the Jackets the win — and end Armuchee's bid for an undefeated run through the subregion.
